GUARDIAN OF THE NEST – TRUMPETER SWAN

 

Trumpeter Swans are indeed a sight to behold.  They are the largest swan in the world, with an eighth foot wing span and a weight of nearly 30 pounds.  Nests like this one are built in May, and the pair of swans will religiously defend their territory of at least 15 acres or more.  The nests get huge – anywhere from 6 to 12 feet in diameter and 18 inches in height.  The pair, which usually bond for life, may use the same nest for many breeding seasons.  Young cygnets are hatched around the first week in July.
